Comparison of electron beam and laser welding for safety critical space applications

Recent work completed for ESA and Ariane Group performed a comprehensive comparative assessment of laser and electron beam processes, targeting stainless steel flow control valve materials and typical penetrations to determine if any one process is more suitable. The comparison performed non-destructive and destructive evaluation of flat plate coupons and flow control valve demonstrator components. Results indicate that for a given joint geometry and beam quality there is no significant difference between the qualities of welds produced by either technique.
